3G Embedded Notebooks 'Attractive to Enterprises'

Many organisations have shied away from embedded wireless broadband (3G) functionality for notebooks because of the high purchasing costs and monthly subscription fees, but new pricing plans and evolution of technology are changing their outlook, it has been claimed.

According to research from analyst Gartner, enterprises should consider investing in embedded 3G in new notebook purchasers for medium and extensive travellers in 2009.

"Our standing recommendation against embedding wireless WAN (Wide Area Network) cards in notebooks has been based on lack of global coverage, high costs and poor asset protection," said Ken Dulaney, vice president of Gartner.

"However, new technologies and pricing due by the end of 2008 have the potential to eliminate the problems of embedded, wireless 3G notebook purchases."

Although embedded wireless WANs have previously been tied to specific technologies and service providers, chipsets that combine multiple technologies and frequencies are now being produced, and can provide near-universal geographic coverage, Gartner added.

A survey published earlier this month by market research group Chadwick Martin Bailey indicated that nearly half of all enterprises now use 3G mobile services, with more than one third planning to deploy WiMax technology in the next 12 months.
