Internal Security Threats Feared Most by IT Managers

IT directors are becoming increasingly concerned by internal security threats, a new survey has revealed, with 80 per cent prioritizing them over external threats.

According to enterprise gateway security firm Secure Computing, inside threats such as data leakage or theft are considered more alarming than external threats from hackers by all but 17 per cent of respondents.

The shift in concern is likely due to the fact that 37 per cent were found to have experienced the leakage of sensitive information. Four in ten pointed to emails as the biggest security risk, while 25 per cent considered Voice over IP to pose the largest risk.

Kieran Lees, UK regional sales director for Secure Computing, said: "It's fascinating to see how perceptions of the threat landscape among senior IT decision makers is evolving, with the insider threat and data leakage rivaling traditional external threats among IT directors' primary concerns."

He added that businesses are beginning to view security as a genuine business enabler rather than just a "necessary evil".

Meanwhile security firm Symantec has warned enterprises that, despite the boom in smartphones such as Research In Motion's BlackBerry and Apple's iPhone, the market for software to protect these devices has not yet taken off.
