Remote Working Practices 'Good for Business'

Businesses should support flexible working practices as they can deliver added benefits to the company, it has been claimed.

Speaking at the Work Wise UK summit, Caroline Waters, director of employment at BT, urged employers to adapt to a workforce that wants to work from home.

She explained that some 1.1 billion hours are lost in the UK every year as a result of commuting, hours that could be used more productively by remote workers.

"The only reason most managers want people close is because they think it gives them control," Ms Waters added. "Flexibility and being hot on the green agenda allows you to reach out and get the best people who all have different perspectives."

Meanwhile, research from Work Wise UK, an organisation established to promote smart working practices, suggests that the average computer spends nearly 29 days travelling to work every year, for a total of more than five years over their working lives.<br/>
