Corporate Networks 'Being Opened Up'

Network security walls are being torn down as enterprises look to support next-generation 'deperimiterised' business networks supporting collaboration between customers, partners and staff.

That is according to new research from IT security group Jericho Forum, which revealed that increasing global operations conducted over the internet are making it more and more difficult for solid corporate 'network security' in the traditional sense.

Surveying 22 IT security providers, it learned that 67 per cent are planning to modify their products in order to deliver security in a new 'perimeterless environment'.

The survey revealed that 45 per cent of vendors have been asked by more than half of their customers to enhance existing products or build new solutions that provide security in such an enviromnent.

Respondents cited access control as the most important security technology to be used by customers to resolve problems associated with perimeter erosion, followed by authentication, compliance and data leak prevention.

A recent report from advisory firm IT Governance suggested that IT security providers must take a more nuanced approach to security, after it was found that a large number of UK employees have been forced to work around their company's IT policies in order to get their jobs done.

In total, 68 per cent said they were forced to bypass security measures in order to do their jobs properly, despite the fact that 96 per cent of organisations had sensitive customer data in play.
