Mobile Broadband Modems 'Increasingly Popular'

Boosted by the deployment of 3G networks around the world, mobile broadband modems are now being utilised to provide wireless connectivity to laptops, ultra-mobile PCs and even desktop computers, according to ABI Research.

A report by the analyst indicated that sales of cellular modems, including PC Cards, Express Cards, USB modems, embedded modems and 3G/Wi-Fi routers, increased cumulatively by 300 per cent during 2007.

By 2013, it is predicted that shipments of mobile broadband modems will reach 200 million units a year.

Dan Shey, principal analyst at ABI Research, commented: "2007 saw cellular modems established as an important connectivity technology for operators as well as for the mobile customer."

He explained that the market is being driven by a competitive modem supplier market, the emergence of 3G networks and the opening up by operators of their networking products to a wider audience, including enterprises, small businesses and consumers.

Dutch communications analyst Telecompaper recently forecast that the number of people using mobile broadband services will triple over the next five years, with shipments of mobile broadband modems expected to reach 17 million by 2012.
