Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Increase in First Quarter 2008

Global sales of mobile phones reached 294.3 million units during the first quarter of 2008, rising by 13.6 per cent over the first quarter of 2007, a new report has revealed.

According to Gartner, sales of high-end devices slipped in Western Europe, as mature markets feel the pressure of an uncertain economy.

The analyst advised phone manufacturers to strengthen their mid-tier offerings in order to take advantage of the market for consumers looking to replace their old phones without spending too much money.

Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devices at Gartner, commented: "We remain confident that 2008 will be a growth year for the mobile phone industry. Sales... will continue to rise in the range of 10-15 per cent."

Meanwhile, the mobile phone industry has developed a new set of recommendations for improving the security of handsets.

The Open Mobile Terminal Platform, a body representing device makers and network operators, said the new guidelines would allow for tighter mobile security in the coming years.
