Firms Urged to Check Wi-Fi Security in Place

Companies and consumers using wireless internet have been advised to check their security settings after a survey revealed that a large number of network systems are not being properly protected.

A report by the Guardian newspaper of 127 Wi-Fi networks revealed that 23 had no security in place at all, meaning that computer criminals and other non-employees would be able to easily hack in and manipulate resources.

Internet security firm Sophos urged Wi-Fi internet users to encrypt and password protect their systems or risk being exposed to cybercrime.

The Guardian reports Graham Cluney, of Sophos, as warning: "If you know what you're doing you can make (the router) visit other sites. For example, you can redirect from Google to a replica site that uploads a keystroke recorder to the computer."

Earlier this several IT security firms warned of a growing number of phishing scams and Trojan attacks, disguised donation requests for disaster relief organisations operating in Burma and China.<br/>
