Citrix unveils new desktop virtualisation solution

Hosted service provider Citrix is planning to launch a new desktop virtualisation environment, XenDesktop, which will compete directly with VMWare's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) product.

XenDesktop is one of several new Citrix products aimed at delivering end-to-end Windows desktops using virtual infrastructure and, according to IDC, represents a comprehensive delivery model that addresses the majority of enterprise needs for IT infrastructure.

Jean-Marc Annonier, research manager for IT spending at the research firm's Australian division, explained that one of the key attributes of XenDesktop is its provisioning system, which allows for the simultaneous booting of up to 1,000 virtual machines from a single hard disk, over the network.

"The combined power of XenDesktop and XenApp and the ability to separate the desktop and application delivery is a key value proposition for Citrix and the use cases for the new solution are numerous," he said.

According to IT website Computing, desktop virtualisation, although a relatively new technology, is being embraced by a growing number of enterprises keen to take advantage of the business advantages that it can deliver.
