'IMS compatible with LTE and WiMax'

Although IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) are not new, they have been slow to take off among infrastructure carriers, but that could now change due to evolving mobile technologies.

ABI Research forecasts that the market for IMS capabilities, solutions and products will begin to pick up as carriers implement networks utilising 4G standards Long Term Evolution (LTE) and WiMax.

IMS, an architectural framework designed to deliver internet protocol multimedia to mobile devices, shares several key components with the LTE and WiMax core architecture which are required to enable end-to-end QoS (Quality of Service) and dynamic charging capabilities for the prioritisation and transmission of data packets.

Nadine Manjaro, senior analyst at ABI Research, explained: "IMS, which enables the rapid creation and deployment of new services and applications, was rather slow to take off because operators weren’t quite sure how they were going to use it."

With more operators moving to open application architecture however, she predicted that IMS will see increasing levels of interest as a base architecture for mobile multimedia services networks, and help ease the transition to open development.

Recentlly, a survey by market research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey indicated that nearly half of all enterprises now subscribe to mobile services, and that over one third plan to deploy WiMax technology within the next 12 months.
