Demand for Windows Mobile to rise dramatically

Sales for Windows Mobile will grow by at least 50 per cent in 2008-09, according to Microsoft, as demand for smartphones increases, Reuters has reported.

Speaking to the news agency, Eddie Wu, managing director of original equipment manager embedded devices at the software giant, said that Microsoft expects to sell 20 million units this fiscal year.

"We're actually still seeing very good growth (for our mobile software) in markets like Europe and the United States," he said, explaining that growth of the mobile operating system has been significant in emerging markets such as Asia, the Middle East, Brazil, Russia and India.

Research by analyst Gartner indicates that global smartphone unit shipments grew by 52.6 per cent to 12 million units in 2007, and the analyst expects further growth in 2008 and 2009.

According to a panel of experts at the recent Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai, the market for mobile internet devices is also set to boom in the next few years, as business users look for products that stand between laptops and smartphones.

Vnunet.com reports that the experts concluded growth in the mobile internet device segment will be driven by the increasing mobility of users looking for a single device to manage all of their telecommunications.<br/>
