Green technology initiatives 'paying off'

Technological innovations will make great strides in reducing the energy consumption of IT systems in the future, even if the amount of data being stored increases to the extent that overall power consumption in the industry increases.

That was the central message of the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit this week, where executives from the world's biggest companies discussed different ways in which business can reduce their environmental impact.

Reuters reports that software company VMware announced expectations that enterprises will increase their investment in virtualisation, which cuts operational costs and improves efficiency, reducing power consumption as a consequence.

According to the news agency, Diane Greene, chief executive of the firm, told those in attendance: "We estimate something like six million servers have been virtualised since we started with VMware. We've saved approximately the… power that Denmark uses in a year."

In April 2008, analyst Gartner published a forecast suggesting that virtualisation will completely change the way that IT is planned, purchased, implemented and managed in the next five years.

The research company said that it will be the highest-impact influence on technology infrastructure through to 2012, with server virtualisation set to lead the way as enterprises look to squeeze more performance from their existing server architectures.<br/>
