Internet a 'vital business platform'

The internet has become a crucial platform for charities and other organisations looking to raise their profiles, particularly as it offers excellent value for money, it has been claimed.

According to communications agency Society Media, internet campaigns can bring in new customers to organisations by catching their attention subtly, with many of the more viral internet-based campaigns appearing completely accidental.

Henry Palmer, director of the firm, said: "The internet is a very important area, particularly for the cost and the different budgets with which you can achieve (results).

"There are examples throughout not just the charity sector but across all sectors where really successful profile-raising campaigns have been launched, that have had a huge impact."

Enterprises are being encouraged to increase their internet presence through the use of web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, social networks and widgets.

However Linus Lai, Asia-Pacific director for research at IDC warned that organisations using web 2.0 to increase contact with customers are also increase their risk of exposure to external malicious code.

He told those in attendance at IDC's Security Vision 2008 conference that as many as 3.5 billion deices are expected to be connected to enterprise networks by 2011, with data security concerns over web 2.0 subsequently set to become more pressing.<br/>
