Government 'should adopt IT security role'

The government should issue advice and support to the IT industry in order to reduce the number of online security breaches in the UK, an expert has been claimed.

Lord Erroll, spokesman for the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee's report on personal internet security, said that the issue is complex, but added that the government could do more to tackle internet crime.

Speaking at the recent event hosted by internet security firm Comsec Consulting, Lord Erroll said: "There are rules and regulations to adhere to, but the IT professional is still unsure of their role or their requirements to ensure their company's compliancy.

"The government needs to take responsibility and put into place a serious provision of support and incentive guidelines, including technical information, for all UK businesses."

He went on to explain that the future of the IT security industry lies in governance and incentives, in the advancement of new encryption technologies and the establishment of groups committed to cyberwarfare, such as the CPNI (Centre for the Protectoin of National Infrastructure).

A new survey by IT services firm Unisys has revealed that identity theft remains the largest security concern among consumers, with 86 per cent worried about the unauthorised access and misuse of their personal details, IT Week reports. <br/>
