MDM 'moves out of early adoption stage'

Enterprise executives are no longer considering how and when to deploy master data management (MDM) solutions, but are instead considering ways to leverage these initiatives to improve business processes, it has been claimed.

According to Forrester Research, the main value of MDM - the management of reference data shared by several separate IT systems and groups – is that it allows for the application of business processes to accurate customer data, destinationCRM.com reports.

The report warned businesses using MDM initiatives to ensure that data is not assumed to be only an IT problem and that multiple data domains are managed with proper techniques, explaining that these are potential reasons for MDM project failure.

Despite these pitfalls, Forrester found that 44 per cent of enterprises have deployed or are likely to consider deploying an MDM initiative within the next 12 month. The research indicated that early adopters were making a strong business case for change among other companies.

In related news, a report published by research group Aberdeen earlier this month (May 7th, 2008) concluded that companies are using MDM to improve customer care and complete business-critical data migration projects quicker.
