Website hacks 'increasing'

A new report from internet security firm IronPort is set to show a worrying rise in the number of website hacks, IT Week reports.

According to the quarterly Spam, Viruses and Malware report, due for release next month, there has been a growing number of SQL injection attacks on legitimate websites redirecting users to malicious sites in the first quarter of 2008.

Hackers embed JavaScript commands into compromised web pages that then send users to sites where their system can become compromised and even turned into a zombie, a system enslaved as part of a botnet.

Jason Steer, product manager at IronPort, told IT Week: "Some organisations forget to secure their web servers because the web site is not seen as a revenue-generating system but a media avenue.

"There are tools to automate JavaScript (attacks) now – this is a serious problem," he added.

In March 2008, IronPort announced new enhancements to its Web Reputation Filters, including the addition of URL Outbreak Detection and Botsite Defence. The new layers of malware defence are available as part of IronPort's S-Series range of web security applications.<br/>
