Broadband market deregulated further

Ofcom has moved to further deregulate the broadband market, in an attempt to foster greater levels of innovation and investment in the industry, it has been reported.

Removing regulation for 70 percent of the wholesale broadband market, the telecoms and internet watchdog said that it had focused on areas in which there is an effective level of competition in order to provide suppliers with a level playing field.

However, it said that moderation and regulation would continue in areas where competition is not yet open and the incumbent telecoms provider is still dominant.

"This is a major step forward in the UK broadband market reflecting the success we have had in promoting effective competition," said Ed Richards, Ofcom Chief Executive.

"We now need to build on these foundations and see timely investment and a competitive market emerge for next generation access as well."

Meanwhile, council tenants in North Solihull have been provided with free or subsidized broadband as part of an initiative by Solihull Community Housing to help narrow the digital divide.<br/>
