Common data exchange to revolutionise wireless USB

The establishment of a common data exchange method for various wireless services will be the biggest advance for wireless USB technology, an ICT expert has claimed.

According to Andrew Ferguson, editor of IT consultancy thinkbroadband, such a method would allow for the transfer of data between devices made by different manufacturers around the home or small office.

"The biggest advance will come when a common data exchange method is arrived at, allowing devices from different manufacturers to share information and control each other," he said.

"One thing to consider is energy efficiency; electricity is going up in price which means people may in time be reluctant to add yet more ‘always-on’ electrical devices to the home."

Wireless USB, a short-range, high-bandwidth wireless radio communications protocol, allows fo the transference of data via Ultra-WideBand (UWB) at speeds of up to 480Mbit/sec at distances of up to three metres and 110Mbit/sec at distances of no more than 10 metres.
