Dark fibre rollouts expanding across Europe

European metropolitan areas are witnessing sustained growth in the roll out of dark fibre, fibre optic cables laid by telecoms networks which are not yet being used, according to new research.

BroadGroup Consulting said that the expansion of dark fibre, cables which are usually laid in preparation for future network expansion, will average at about eight per cent per year through to 2012.

The analyst suggested that this is evidence of a more cautious approach to network deployment across the continent.

Steve Wallage, managing director at BroadGroup, said: "Equipment suppliers and operators should be leveraging the current opportunities which will provide strategic assets for the future.

"However regulators need to move more quickly to open markets to 'altnets' without which broadband connectivity will leave the significant customer base under served."

According to BroadGroup, dark fibre deployments are mainly focusing on providing network access to enterprises and other operators, rather than being used as strategic assets.<br/>
