IT can help reduce carbon emissions

Chief information officers (CIOs) looking to reduce the energy consumption and subsequent carbon output of their IT services should consider adopting green IT practices, it has been claimed.

According to environmental advisory company Carbon Footprint, organisations can reduce their emissions by encouraging remote working and conducting meetings online, rather than offsite and in-person.

John Buckley, managing director of the company, said: "Green IT is not just about reducing the environmental impact of the IT technologies a company uses; it is also about using IT to reduce carbon emissions of the whole business.

"IT is a great enabler to help reduce carbon emissions, and at the same time can reduce costs for the company in reductions in travel expenses and staff travel time."

As well as saving these costs, organisations which operate datacentres could save a considerable amount of their power and cooling budget by upgrading to green datacentres, while they could also implement virtualisation solutions to limit the number of servers required for business operations.

According to research conducted by Zero Carbon Footprint, the average PC today consuming 200-300W of power would produce approximately 22Kg of CO2 emissions every year, even with power saving modes activated.
