In-building wireless systems to reach 500,000 buildings

In-building wireless systems, providing mobile coverage and capacity indoors, are growing at a rate of nearly 26 per cent, and will be present in more than 500,000 buildings around the world by 2013, it has been forecast.

Dan Shey, principal analyst, said: "Buildings are the last great frontier for cellular coverage of vast portions of the population. With the majority of mobile voice and data network traffic originating inside buildings, operators need to have a strong in-building wireless service in an increasingly competitive environment."

He explained that equipment such as femtocells, picocells and active or passive distributed antenna systems, components of various in-building wireless systems, would change the marketplace for service business customers, with mobile operators able to deliver data and communications to customers in new ways.

According to technology analyst Research and Markets, advancement of femtocells, which allow for the delivery of wireless communications and SIP based push technologies around the office and the home, will be rapidly adopted in the next few years.

It said that the ability of femtocells to leverage the internet will make them an economic force in the communications marketplace, bringing about changes in the way that voice services in particular are delivered.<br/>
