Virtualisation 'to have biggest impact on IT industry'

Virtualisation and virtual working will have the most impact on IT organisations in the future, a new survey by IT Week has suggested.

Questioning 620 UK IT managers to learn of the key technologies and trends that will affect the industry going forward, the technology website found that over half of the respondents expect virtualisation to be top of the list. This was followed by 43 per cent citing virtual working and 38 per cent for green IT.

Looking back over the past decade, respondents identified broadband as the most important technology development, being rated in the top three by approximately 75 per cent. This was followed by e-commerce which was chosen by a half, while the launch of Google came third, cited by a third of respondents.

Meanwhile, IT Week readers selected reduction of costs and IT security as their department's biggest priorities at present, two areas that have always been of great concern for IT leaders.

A recent report from Gartner highlighted the significance that virtualisation will have on the IT industry in the future, explaining that it promises reduced operating costs, more efficient use of hardware, and improved infrastructure resilience.
