Optical networking market 'growing'

Although it dipped by 12 per cent in the fourth quarter last year, the optical networking market grew by 23 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2008 to reach $3 billion (£1.55 billion) in terms of equipment sales.

That is according to research firm Ovum, which explained that optical networking equipment is being used to consolidated different services into a single networking, while supporting growth in enterprise services.

It also suggested that optical networks provide higher capacity and reduced costs for internet services, such as video and multimedia, as well as advanced digital services.

Although North America saw the strongest growth, every region, including Europe, spent more on the technology in the first quarter of 2008 than they did at the beginning of 2007, Dana Cooperson, vice president of optical networking at Ovum, noted.

Earlier this month, research from public network firm iLocus revealed that enterprises are investing more in voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology this year, despite any fears that may exist about the economy.

It found that the number of VoIP access server licenses shipped globally had increased by 67 per cent this year, while the overall amount of traffic increased by 35 per cent, according to Web Wire.
