802.11 Bluetooth 'will not harm UWB'

Members of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) have announced the development of Bluetooth over the 802.11 wireless network (Wi-Fi) standards, something that will give the technology a boost in data transfer rates and increase its appeal.

Although there have been concerns expressed that this could see the end of Bluetooth products being integrated with Ultra-Wideband radio technology for high-speed data transmission, ABI Research believes this will not be the case.

According to the analyst, utilisation of Wi-Fi is likely meant to fill a short-term role while UWB is being developed, as the technology is expected to become common in the future.

"The Bluetooth SIG's announcement will not have an impact on the timing of the UWB market," said ABI Research senior analyst Douglas McEuen. "UWB remains set to be delivered as a viable radio to wireless handsets during the 2009/2010 time frame."

The Bluetooth-Wi-FI combination, also known as high-speed Bluetooth, will provide consumers with faster data rates by moving from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi for the transmission of larger files.

ABI Research expects that the inclusion of Wi-Fi in the Bluetooth space will attract more consumers, setting the stage for future UWB deployments.<br/>
