Social networks 'still pose business security threat'

Despite efforts to make social networks more secure for consumers, enterprises are still faced with significant risks as a result of their staff using these sites, it has been warned.

Facebook recently implemented 40 new safeguards designed to protect its younger users, but web 2.0 security firm WorkLights warned that they offer no extra protection to businesses.

David Lavenda, vice president of marketing at the company, said: "There is still concern at companies where employees are tapping into the considerable business-to-business and business-to-consumer benefits that social networking sites offer modern businesses."

He explained that companies must ensure their systems are secure, noting that there are relatively inexpensive enterprise technology solutions that provide protection as well as personalized social networking tools built on top of publically-available web 2.0 services.

According to a new report by business infrastructure software company Software AG, meanwhile, IT departments in the UK are looking to invest in business process management (BPM) and service-orientated architecture (SOA) in the next six months, as part of plans for infrastructure modernisation.
