Customers 'paying too much for their broadband'

A number of small businesses and consumers could be paying too much for their broadband, based on the amount of bandwidth they actually use, it has been claimed.

A British broadband supplier explained that many customers are not aware of or do not understand how much bandwidth they use, a problem that means many of them may not be on the best package to suit their needs.

PlusNet added that it had launched a new bandwidth usage calculator to help consumers estimate their actual broadband usage, and ensure that they avoid being charged excessively.

"Many customers don't understand how much bandwidth they use, what activities contribute to heavy usage amounts or what exceeding download limits actually means for their bill," noted Neil Armstrong, products and marketing director at PlusNet.

"The aim of our bandwidth usage calculator is to help customers to actually see what they consume so they can make sure they are on the right broadband package – and also avoid hidden usage policies or surprise bills."

According to research by YouGov, commissioned by PlusNet, 78 per cent of broadband users are unaware of how much of their monthly usage allowance they actually use up, while 27 per cent admit they do not know what their allowance is.
