Most organisations get significant value from IT

A new survey of nearly 800 enterprise executives from companies around the world has revealed that some 60 per cent are convinced they receive a lot of value from their IT activities.

According to the research by the independent IT Governance Institute (ITGI), this value is felt in ways including better customer relations, more cost-effective risk management and higher product leadership.

The institute found that "innovative" companies were five times more likely to continually optimise their technology processes as they recognise that IT is fundamental to their business and are using it as a competitive weapon.

However, nearly half of all companies polled have not yet implemented an IT performance measurement solution, something that suggests conservative companies are being held back by their preconceptions towards the importance of IT.

Lynn Lawton, international president of ITGI, said: " What stood out for me was the 20 per cent of respondents who do not determine their IT resource requirements based on business priorities. So what do they base them on?

"Improved IT governance goes hand in hand with getting better value from IT. Companies need to determine if they are getting value from what they have in their portfolio and therefore identify what they can do without."
