Leading firms delivering 'self-service BI capabilities'

Top enterprises are using a mixture of capabilities to achieve improved business intelligence (BI) deployment strategies to end users, it has been revealed.

According to Aberdeen, best-in-class companies – those performing in the top 20 per cent – are able to achieve 161 per cent greater ability to deliver 'self-service' BI because of improvements made to user information access and support, on-going maintenance and support, and improved time-to-completion of BI implementation projects.

The analyst explained that 80 per cent of leading enterprises have seen an increase in enterprise-wide use of current BI deployments as a result, compared to just 50 per cent of industry average companies.

"Traditional BI deployments have been characterised as consisting of long, complex implementations involving difficult data integration issues, costly software licenses, and user training requirements," said David Hatch, a research director at Aberdeen.

"All three of these issues are reported as top inhibitors by respondents, and often push deployment projects beyond the time and skill-set boundaries of the organisation," Mr Hatch continued, explaining that chief information officers are expected to deliver actionable information despite budget, time and skill set constraints.

Last month, Gartner forecast that worldwide BI spending will grow at a rate of 11.2 per cent in 2008 to reach $5.8 billion (£2.9 billion). It said that growth would likely remain unhampered by any potential economic downturn because of the great priority placed on information by CIOs.
