Businesses 'must measure mobile working initiatives'

Enterprises are deploying technologies that facilitate mobile working, but they are failing to measure the impact that these applications have on the productivity of mobile workers, it has been warned.

Analyst Gartner told Computer Weekly that a failure to monitor the efficiency of mobile working technologies prevents IT projects from delivering real business value.

Scott Morrison, a researcher at the company, told the website: "Ninety per cent of businesses now have remote workers but 25 per cent have not defined service levels to support these workers."

He added that IT managers must make sure mobile workers have access to the right type of connectivity if they are to deliver significant business value, suggesting that organisations should conduct analyses of the most likely connection points for mobile workers to determine how they would connect in each.

Meanwhile, manufacturer Stonewood has launched a new range of encrypted hard drives that provide an extra layer of protection to mobile workers in organisations.

Grant Gutteridge, sales director at Stonewood, explained to CRN that that sales are being driven by the push towards remote and mobile working, which create a need for more appropriate security products.
