Global EMS industry saw 'double digit growth' in 2007

The global electronic manufacturing services (EMS) industry grew by 17 per cent in 2007, with revenues reaching $268.1 billion (£137 billion), according to new research from IDC.

The analyst found that the original design manufacture (ODM) sector continued to grow ahead of the rest of the market, with an annual growth rate of 23 per cent, despite the fact that the EMS sector accounted for more than 60 per cent of the industry.

Computers and consumer devices remained the two largest product segments last year, accounting for 36 per cent and 29 per cent of all EMS revenue respectively.

"While computing remains the largest single sector, followed by consumer devices, the industrial segment experienced constant solid growth for EMS firms and displaced servers and storage as the third largest product segment for the industry," said Michael Palma, senior research analyst at IDC

"ODMs need to evaluate current product and customer portfolios, and look beyond notebooks and mobile phones for future growth," he added.

According to market intelligence firm iSuppli, global revenue from third-party shipments of DRam modules for use in PCs and other electronics products will rise by 9.4 per cent in 2008, after declines of 33.5 per cent last year.
