Enterprises must prepare for IPv6

Large organisations need to begin planning changes that will be required when the latest version of the internet's routing protocol becomes standard, or risk losing online customers, it has been warned.

According to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), most internet communications still use internet protocol version 4 (IPv4), but a growing number a beginning to use IPv6 and IPv4 addresses are estimated to run out by 2011.

Although they will not be directly affected because they use private IP addresses, business have now been advised to implement IPv6-compatible systems to ensure they remain competitive, reports ZDNet.co.uk.

Paul Twomey, president of Icann, told the website: "The people who have got IPv4 are fat and happy, while the people using new network applications are using IPv6. There will come a time when the people who are fat and happy will need to interact.

"The users using the network will want to interact with other users. There are still implementation issues that people need to work through. Wake up and plan now."

Meanwhile, the EU Commission has stated that it aims to ensure at least 25 per cent of all European users are ready to use IPv6 to access most of their normal services and content by the end of 2010.<br/>
