CIOs failing to innovate

Although innovation is considered a key priority among chief information officers (CIOs), only three per cent of them have high quality innovation programmes in place, according to Forrester Research.

Surveying a selection of CIOs, the analyst found that many are failing to innovate because they are placing too much emphasis on formal practice, and are waiting to be properly assigned an innovation leadership role. The research also revealed that many are waiting for guidance from their business colleagues.

IT Week reports that Bobby Cameron, author of the report, said: "There is no reason to wait to innovate. Instead, CIOs should tactically pursue innovation while revamping IT. Then when it's time, they will be ready to engage the business in a formal innovation process."

The report suggested that CIOs should arrange their innovation practices around people, processes and technology, in order to make them part of the day-to-day of IT activity.

According to a report from analyst IDC, CIOs find it relatively easy to secure their IT systems, but expect to face challenges in the next 12 months relating to cost reduction, lack of resources, meeting user expectations and developing effective business cases for investments.<br/>
