DSL users switching to WiMax

More than 12 per cent of global broadband users could switch to a fixed WiMax connection within the next five years, it has been claimed.

A study by Juniper Research revealed that WiMax technology could be deployed to areas with low levels of DSL coverage, attracting 47 million users by 2013.

Although WiMax predictions have been over-enthusiastic, Juniper insisted that there is a strong market for the technology in under served areas.

Howard Wilcox, author of the report, said: "WiMax will be an attractive offer in areas where there are no wired networks, and in areas where the existing DSL speed is suboptimal. WiMax will solve the broadband access problem for users located at the fringes of DSL coverage."

He suggested that Western Europe, along with North America and East Asia, would provide strong demand for the new technology, even in developed markets.

According to chip manufacturer and WiMax backer Intel, there could be WiMax coverage across most of the UK in as soon as two years time. ZDNet reports that Ashish Patel, EMEA managing director of Intel Capital, told a recent roundtable discussion that the prospects for the technology will be decided by upcoming spectrum auctions.<br/>
