Wi-Fi myths challenged by new data

A new Wi-Fi market study by ABI Research has exposed many of the common assumptions held about the wireless industry as myths, the company claims.

The analyst claimed it has become a popular belief that independent access points, which do not need controllers, are dead. However, research suggests that a third (34 per cent) of all access points that shipped in 2007 were actually independent.

Similarly, it has been claimed that the Wi-Fi equipment market is being driven primarily by enterprises, but ABI Research pointed out that there is also strong demand for access points from smaller businesses as well as consumers.

Research director Stan Schatt explained that enterprise-grade Wi-Fi equipment comes with a great many more features, including greater security, but that revenue from enterprise access point purchases accounted for only a third (32 per cent) of all market revenue.

Meanwhile, new research from analyst Infonetics has revealed that worldwide sales of Wi-Fi equipment, including independent and dependent access points, rose to $1.9 billion (£976 million) 0in 2007, up 20 per cent compared to the year before.<br/>
