Notebooks 'overtaking' desktops in 2009

From late 2008 to early 2009, the PC microprocessor market will enter an 'inflection point' when the number of microprocessors shipping for notebooks will overtake the number for desktops for the first time ever.

A report from analyst firm In-Stat suggests that the desktop PC market will see growth fall into the single digits for the next several years but that commercial demand will remain strong.<br/> <br/>"In the long-run, desktop PCs will see growth in developing economies because of the extreme price sensitivities and in commercial applications through the growth of smaller form factors," explained Jim McGregor, In-Stat principal analyst. "Richer content over the Internet and changing usage models will also drive overall market growth in the future."

The research also predicted that competition between major chip manufacturers would remain fierce as each deploys new strategies, capabilities and technologies in an attempt to acquire increased leverage in the changing PC marketplace.

Recently, analyst IDC revealed that worldwide PC shipments increased by 14.6 per cent to 69.5 million units in the first quarter of 2008. Earlier this year, the firm suggested that double digit growth will continue in the PC market throughout 2008 and 2009.<br/>
