Phishing attacks 'on the rise'

Phishing attacks now make up more than two thirds of all malware by volume, with their number having increased for the second month running, it has been revealed.

According to research from internet security firm Network Box, phishing attacks accounted for just 24 per cent of all malware in February, a figure that rose to 48 per cent in March and 67 per cent in April.

Security news website IT Backbones reported that phishing attacks have risen so dramatically because of the relative ease of putting one together.

It cited Simon Heron, internet security analyst at Network Box, as saying: ""We will see more phishing with an increasing per centage in the form of Spear phishing, which is targeted phishing and Whaling, ie targeting big fish like chief executives."

He added that IT departments must ensure they stay up-to-date with all the latest trends in e-crime if they are to protect their organisations from the threat of cyber attacks.

Network Box recently released 'live watch' trace functionality for its full range of managed Unified Threat Management+ mail, web proxy and firewall services, something that allows administrators real-time access to live transactional data.
