New software for enterprise PCI compliance

A security software firm has developed a new application to help ensure that enterprises comply with standards set by the Payment Card Industry (PCI).

Stonesoft developed the firewall and IPS (intrusion-prevention system) so that sensitive customer data is protected at businesses conducting transactions online.

The software was launched in time for the introduction of new PCI standards, which come into effect at the end of June 2008, requiring all web-facing applications to protect themselves from known attacks. It is hoped that doing so will reduce the number of corporate data breaches.

"Achieving compliance with PCI Data Security Standards is quite a struggle for most organisations," said Klaus Majewski, product marketing manager for Stonesoft.

"This new requirement to protect all web-facing applications against known attacks is what our firewall and IPS solutions have been doing for years already."

Meanwhile, internet oversight body Icann has warned that business leaders massively underestimate the importance of the internet to their firms' success, and are failing to properly ensure that they are adequately protected from web-based threats.
