Navigation devices to generate billions in revenue

Enterprise and consumer navigation is quickly becoming an established electronics category as more customers discover the uses of location-based services, according to ABI Research.

The analyst forecast that the market for navigation devices and systems will reach an annual sales revenue of $62 billion (£31.7 billion) by 2012, with personal navigation devices (PNDs) remaining the most prevalent device type.

"Despite disappointing sales levels in the first quarter of 2008… the navigation market still faces a bright future," noted Dominique Bonte, principal analyst at ABI Research. "The current decrease in sales has to be seen as a logical reaction following the extraordinary sales growth during the fourth quarter of 2007."

ABI Research also highlighted a growing trend which is seeing manufacturers integrating navigation capabilities into other form factors, such as mobile internet devices (MIDs).

According to research from Aberdeen earlier this year, best-in-class enterprises are using location-enabled tools to increase their service performance and improve their service response times by an average of 24 per cent.<br/>
