Increasing consumer demand for low cost notebooks

Ultra low-cost notebook PCs are finding success in established regions as mobile, secondary computing devices among consumers and in the education PC market, it has been claimed.

According to IDC, the small size of these notebooks (seven to 10 inch screens) and their focus on mobility has redefined the usage model for these devices. The analyst noted that they are used primarily for online activities and are carried around more often than standard notebook PCs.

"Consumers have embraced the idea of the PC, particularly the portable PC, as a personal device rather than a shared household device," explained Bob O'Donnell, vice president of clients and displays at IDC.

"Very low-cost, compact notebooks than can be carried around and provide quick and easy access to the internet via Wi-Fi hot spots fill an important spot in this burgeoning market – the first disposable notebooks."

The analyst forecast that global shipments of ultra low-cost notebook PCs will grow from 500,000 units in 2007 to 9 million units by 2012.
