Strategic approach required for systems management

IT departments need to develop a systems management strategy and consider ways in which it can be used to deliver real business value, it has been claimed.

According to analyst Butler Group, calls from executives for the delivery of higher quality services from IT infrastructure are causing IT managers to think about services from a business perspective.

Roy Illsley, senior research analyst at Butler Group, explained: "Organisational IT structures are often characterised by many different silo'ed teams o technical specialists.

"The result of this silo'ed approach is that IT resources are locked into technologies, and organisations face expensive retraining or new hiring cost if technologies new to the organisation are selected."

He added that this approach has created a gap between the requirements of business users and the management capabilities of IT departments, but said that management tools can tackle this problem by making IT proactive and business focused.

Meanwhile, research from Forrester has indicated that just three per cent of enterprises have high quality innovation programmes in place, despite the fact that this is considered a priority among chief information officers (CIOs).<br/>
