IT managers 'too preoccupied by maintenance'

Senior level IT managers are being prohibited from taking on a larger role in the board room because of the amount of time they lose dealing with IT maintenance, Computer Weekly reports.

A survey by software supplier CA revealed that managers are being forced to spend too much time on IT maintenance and support rather than business aspects of IT. The research also indicated that many managers do not have the skills to adequately convey the strategic benefits of IT to executives.

Surveying some 250 senior IT managers, CA learned that 73 per cent of managers making decisions relating to business do not consider the impact of their decisions on IT, while 68 per cent believe their IT investment budgets to be 'insufficient', particularly as most of it goes on maintenance and support.

Computer Weekly reports that Kirsten Cox, European product marketing director at CA, said: "This increased pressure is leading to reduced opportunity for IT management, who either do not have the skills to argue the business case for IT and raise their game, or who are too busy fighting fires to do so."

According to Kishore Swaminathan, chief scientist at consultant Accenture, there are a number of important trends that IT managers will be faced with over the next 36 months, including Cloud computing, social networking, increased emphasis on business intelligence and growth in web 2.0 usage.<br/>
