SAP to bring business software to BlackBerry

BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) has teamed with software giant SAP to bring business software to its flagship device in a move set to bolster its appeal among corporate users.

With many executives looking to embrace Apple's iPhone, RIM is hoping to cement its position as leader in the development of corporate smart devices by providing access to SAP's customer relationship management (CRM) software on its BlackBerries.

Software will be sent via mobile networks and will work with all models in the BlackBerry range. It should be available within weeks, Jim Balsillie, chief executive of RIM, told reporters.

"There's no comparison to the iPhone," he insisted, explaining that the partnership wit SAP puts RIM firmly ahead in the corporate space. "What we're doing no one else can do."

Bill McDermott, president of SAP Americas, added that merging SAP CRM with BlackBerry smartphone applications including email, address book and organiser, would provide business users with unfettered and unsurpassed access to data, anywhere.

In the future, there are plans to release the entire SAP Business Suite on BlackBerry, including the company's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Supply Chain Management (SCM) applications.
