Mobile network connections 'to expand massively in next few years'

The number of mobile network connections used by devices for machine-to-machine communication will grow from 37.5 million in 2007 to 186 million in 2012, increasing at a compound annual rate of 37.9 per cent, it has been claimed.

According to research from research company Berg Insight, the market will be dominated by GSM, currently one of the leading technologies in Europe, while CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) will also gain a footing, particularly in the North American market.

The company also predicted that vehicle telematics, for wireless vehicle communications will come to be one of the main applications of the M2M mobile market, accounting for over half of all connections.

"Safety and security concerns - manifested either in public regulations or customer preferences - is tipping the balance in favour of massive rollouts of telematics applications by the global automotive industry," explained Tobias Ryberg, senior analyst at Berg Insight.

Recently, Aberdeen published research suggesting that enterprises will increase their investment in mobility in 2008, with an average reported year-on-year increase of 7.6 per cent expected in mobility budgets compared to last year.
