Vendors announce 'virtualised firewalls'

IT security vendor Secure Computing has announced a new partnership with VMware to provide customers with secure gateway appliances for virtualised environments.

The appliances will be built to integrate into VMware's virtualised environments, and will provide users with tools to manage security for a number of virtual machines or applications through a single gateway.

As well as providing greater security, Secure Computing claimed that the use of the new tools in association with VMware virtualisation would also reduce operating expenses, improve business continuity and cut down carbon emissions.

"VMware virtualisation is the ideal platform for partners like Secure Computing to develop an easy way for customers to deploy their business-critical security solutions," said Dan Chu, vice president of emerging products at VMware

"Combining Secure Computing's security gateway virtual appliances with VMware virtualisation allows organisations to scale out their security architecture and gain additional datacentre resources without added complexity."

According to a recent report from Gartner published in March 2008, virtualisation is likely to be the highest-impact trend on IT infrastructure and operations for at least the next four to five years.
