IT crucial to delivery of globalised business services

Enterprises will need to utilise software-as-a-service (SaaS) and distributed computing if they are to successfully deliver bespoke business services to customers all around the world, it has been claimed.

Speaking it the recent Interop 2008 IT conference in the United States, CK Prahalad, business professor from the University of Michican, said that IT innovation remains fundamental to future business success.

"The bottom line is very simple IT does matter," tech website Computer Weekly reported him as saying. He explained that tools such as databases and networks would only grow in use if businesses attempt to increase their customer base by delivering products at a global level.

"The IT challenge is creating the infrastructure that can support such businesses," he added.

The conference, which was held in Las Vegas, also saw software developer Spiceworks unveiling an updated version of its desktop application that allows enterprises to track outsourced services and navigate managed devices.

Spiceworks IT Desktop 3.0 also features an SaaS inventory management feature that allows firms to track the SaaS services that they subscribe to.
