CIOs 'should lead by example' on software


The Business Software Alliance, an anti-piracy body in the UK, has called on enterprise chief information officers (CIOs) to set an example in terms of asset management that can be followed by smaller organisations, in order to reduce software piracy, it has been reported.

According to IT Week, the BSA said that CIOs must take a leadership role and provide other companies with an "ethical example" of how to run their businesses.

The call was made on the same day that new research from the alliance revealed that UK piracy rates have dropped for the first time in three years, along with those from the majority of the 108 nations surveyed for the report.

The BBC reports that Julie Strawson, chairwoman of the BSA UK committee, said: "It's encouraging that we're making progress in the battle against software piracy, however there's a huge amount yet to be done. The fact remains that an unacceptable level of UK organisations still flout software licensing regulations."

The amount of illegal or unlicensed PC software being used in the UK fell by one per cent, to 26 per cent last year, with losses to the industry costing approximately £925 million.
