What is 21CN and Consult21?



21CN is the name given to BT’s 21st century network programme. Recently, BT set out a timetable for implementing its vision of a 21st century network - a truly customer-focused network enabling communications in a range of formats across an IP-based network.

It is a time of great change and opportunity in the telecoms industry with the move to broadband and the growth of convergence. Making the most of the commercial opportunities requires an infrastructure that can support and deliver such services efficiently.

21CN will be the means to deliver new and compelling products and services. BT Wholesale’s customers, consumers, businesses and the economy at large will benefit, but BT cannot maximise this opportunity alone.

We are making every effort to ensure that everyone understands our 21CN vision and the progress we are making. We are talking to suppliers, to investors, to consultants, to academics and the regulator and will continue to do so. During the programme, dialogue with our customers is key.

We will keep you informed as investment decisions are taken. And, in addition to business as usual practices, we have also run a formal 21st century network customer consultation process delivered by our Consult21 team.

Consult21 is the programme designed to consult with Communication Providers (CPs) and BT on BT's 21st Century Network (21CN).  Consult21 is made up of a dedicated team with the objectives of:

  • Ensuring that industry is aware of the 21CN vision and BT's progress towards it
  • Achieving a shared understanding with industry on 21CN
  • Ensuring industry has an opportunity to input into and influence 21CN development and activities

("Industry" means customers who purchase Openreach and/or BT Wholesale products)

What are you looking for?
Below are some hints and tips to help you navigate around the key areas:-

I 'm looking for information on the Consult21 working groups - from the front page click on the "Working group" information box - this will then take you to all of the current Consult21 working groups.  Then click on the working group of interest for all the relevant information.

I'm looking for when the working groups are taking place - from the front page click on the "Meeting planner" information box, the proposed schedule of working groups can be found there.

I'm looking for a briefing document/consultation document - again these can be found in the "Meeting planner" information box, the spreadsheet is called the C21 documentation reference library and filters are in place to help you find the document you need.

I'm looking for the latest information on 21CN activities - from the front page, click on the "Consult21 documents" information box - in here you will find the monthly summary of 21CN activities via Consult21.

I want to find out if there are any webcalls or events coming up or listen to replays of previous webcalls - from the front page, click on the "Webcall information" box, from here it's quite easy to find details of future Consult21 and Customer Experience (CE) webcalls plus replay details of previous webcalls.

I'm looking for a document that's held in the secure members' area - click on the secure members' area section and, if you have access, the document will be in the secure area content area (click on the link on the right hand side).  If you need access to the area details can be found on the front of the secure members' area section on how to apply for access
